Barbie Is Releasing an Official Laverne Cox Doll in Time For Pride

In celebration of trans icon and four-time Emmy nominee Laverne Cox’s 50th birthday, and just in time for Pride season, Mattel and Barbie are releasing a brand new Laverne Cox Barbie doll as a part of their Tribute Collection.

 

This doll is the first of its kind for Barbie, giving trans girls a doll who looks like and is like them. Not only that, but the doll celebrates trans rights and the people who fight for them. Barbie is also making a donation in Cox’s name to TransFamilySOS, a nonprofit whose mission is to create a more gender-affirming and accepting community.

 

 

By honoring Cox, Barbie is showing kids of all ages that trans women are women, that trans trailblazers deserve a place of honor, and that trans girls are welcome in the world of Barbie.

Mattel and Barbie worked closely with Cox while designing and sculpting the doll. Not only is the doll based off of some of her iconic red carpet looks, but Cox had input in the doll’s wardrobe, including picking her favorite color, oxblood red, for her gown. Cox also approved every part of the doll, including sketches, skin tone samples, and shoes. 

“It’s been a dream for years to work with Barbie to create my own doll,” Laverne Cox said in a statement. “I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled after a transgender person to their collection. I hope that people can look at this Barbie and dream big like I have in my career.  The space of dreaming and manifesting is such a powerful source and leads you to achieve more than what you originally thought was possible.”

I know this is one doll I can’t wait to add to my collection! So many trans girls grow up wishing we had dolls (and specifically, Barbies) to play with — now there’s one made especially for us.

“We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate award-winning actress, producer, writer and LGBTQ+ rights trailblazer Laverne Cox with a doll,” Lisa McKnight, Mattel's executive vice president and global head of Barbie and dolls, said in a statement. “We are proud to highlight the importance of inclusion and acceptance at every age and to recognize Laverne’s significant impact on culture with a Tribute Collection Barbie.”

The Tribute Collection also includes Barbies of Lucille Ball and Queen Elizabeth II, and now, it includes Laverne Cox as well.

The Laverne Cox Barbie Doll is available online and at Walmart and Target locations across the country starting today, May 25, with a suggested retail price of $39.99.

Stonewall: “Netflix’s Disclosure is a wake-up call for how society views trans people”

Netflix’s new documentary Disclosure couldn’t have come at a better time. The film  — subtitled Trans Lives on Screen — is a Pride Month viewing that details the history of transgender representation in film and TV.

 Leading trans thinkers and creatives, including Laverne Cox, Lilly Wachowski, Yance Ford, and MJ Rodriguez share their reactions and resistance to some of Hollywood’s most beloved moments in the eye-opening production.

Jeff Ingold, head of media at Stonewall – which campaigns for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in the UK – gives his take on the Netflix documentary, particularly why it’s a step in the right direction for changing how society views trans people.

He told RadioTimes.com: “The way the media represents and talks about LGBT people is a crucial part of changing the way society views and accepts us. Not to mention that the images we see – or don’t see – of LGBT people on-screen growing up can have a profound impact on our own sense of self and wellbeing. Put simply, representation matters and that’s what makes a documentary like Disclosure incredibly vital.

“What makes Disclosure so powerful is that it centres the voices and experiences of trans actors, activists, filmmakers and scholars. So trans people are not only the subject of the conversation, but they are the ones actually doing the talking.

“In doing so, the documentary is able to show in a very personal and unique way how the increasing visibility of trans people in the media isn’t always a good thing and that it’s been met with a rise in violence directed towards the community.”

Ingold continued: “Disclosure is a wake-up call to the fact that, for the most part, trans people’s portrayals on-screen have been offensive, dehumanising and their lives are often treated as a joke. The cumulative effect of which is devastating and damaging for trans people, but also has had an enormous impact on the way the rest of society views trans people.
“At such a vital time for trans equality, the world needs to hear the stories and voices of diverse trans people. If we’re to change the way people think and feel about trans people, we need greater and fairer representation of trans people in the media.

“Disclosure is essential viewing to create a world where every person sees themselves in what they watch and feels confident that their identity is valid.”

Laverne Cox di OITNB presenta Disclosure, docufilm Netflix sulla rappresentazione delle persone trans

Dopo la presentazione al Sundance, il 19 giugno Disclosure sbarca su Netflix. Questo nuovo documentario, diretto da Sam Feder e prodotto fra gli altri da Laverne Cox (Sophia Burset in Orange Is The New Black), fa il suo debutto nel mese del Pride per offrire uno sguardo illuminante e senza precedenti sulla rappresentazione cinematografica e televisiva delle persone e dei personaggi transgender.

Il documentario porta il pubblico dietro le quinte di un processo culturale che Hollywood riflette e alimenta, influenzando sia il ruolo delle persone trans che la percezione degli spettatori nel tempo. E così alcuni tra i membri più brillanti e popolari della comunità si prendono la scena per condividere emozioni, reazioni ed obiezioni ad alcuni dei momenti più significativi sperimentati e osservati nel mondo di Hollywood.

Disclosure ha preso vita in modo splendido perché al centro della produzione ci sono state delle persone trans: dalle prime fasi di ricerca alla distribuzione ne sono state coinvolte più di 150, ha raccontato Feder a Deadline. Ora che Netflix ha acquistato i diritti di Disclosure, gli abbonati nel mondo potranno guardarlo nel mese del Pride, un periodo in cui di solito la comunità LGBTQ scende in piazza per celebrare le nostre vite e lottare per i nostri diritti. Sono così orgoglioso di tutte le persone trans che hanno contribuito a rendere Disclosure ciò che è, e non vedo l’ora di condividerlo.

Sono davvero felicissima che Disclosure abbia trovato casa su Netflix, in cui il pubblico di tutto il mondo avrà un posto in prima fila per godersi il lavoro di Sam Feder e il suo sguardo sulle persone trans alle prese con la nostra storia sullo schermo, ha aggiunto Laverne Cox, impegnata davanti e dietro la macchina da presa. Sono estremamente grata a tutte le persone trans che hanno offerto voci, storie e genialità a questo film. Per me Disclosure è un sogno che diventa realtà. Siamo entusiasti di poter continuare a lavorare con Netflix per fare degli storici passi in avanti nella rappresentazione delle persone trans sullo schermo.

Il trailer di Disclosure pubblicato da Netflix introduce alcune delle menti più brillanti e creative coinvolte nel progetto. Si intravedono quindi Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black), Janet Mock, Mj Rodriguez e Angelica Ross (Pose), Lilly Wachowski (Matrix, Sense8, Work in Progress), Yance Ford (Strong Island) e Jamie Clayton (Sense8, The L Word: Generation Q), ma c’è spazio anche per Chaz Bono (American Horror Story), Trace Lysette e Alexandra Billings (Transparent), Elliot Fletcher (The Fosters), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) e molti altri.
Analizzando film come A Florida Enchantment (1914), Quel Pomeriggio di Un Giorno da Cani, La Moglie del Soldato e Boys Don’t Cry, oltre a serie come I Jefferson, The L Word e Pose, i protagonisti di Disclosure ricostruiscono una storia che è disumanizzante e al contempo in trasformazione, complessa e a tratti comica.

Il risultato è un racconto avvincente di come la rappresentazione delle persone trans sullo schermo, le credenze sociali e la realtà della vita del popolo transgender interagiscano dinamicamente. Il regista Sam Feder ridefinisce così scene familiari e personaggi iconici per osservarli da prospettive nuove, e permette agli spettatori di capire come ciò che un tempo aveva catturato l’immaginario americano susciti oggi sentimenti nuovi.
Spero che Disclosure possa essere usato come un modello, non soltanto in relazione al modo in cui impariamo a conoscere le vite delle persone trans, ma anche quelle delle altre comunità emarginate, ha spiegato Feder all’EW. Se non sei un uomo bianco etero e cisgender, i media fanno abbastanza schifo. E le vite delle persone trans nere sono particolarmente vulnerabili.

All’inizio volevo che questo film si concentrasse sulla rappresentazione mediatica delle persone trans, ma poi mi sono accorto che continuavo a sovrapporsi alla loro vita e rappresentazione a Hollywood. Questo ha cambiato profondamente la mia prospettiva. Ho smesso di guardare film e serie tv di Hollywood vent’anni fa perché li trovavo fastidiosi, dolorosi e offensivi. La realtà era già abbastanza difficile perché mi venisse voglia di guardare cose che mi avrebbero fatto sentire peggio.

Gli ultimi anni, però, dimostrano come le cose stiano iniziando a cambiare. E pur nel tempo delle rabbiose proteste del Black Lives Matter e nel caos transfobico scatenato da J.K. Rowling, Disclosure appare un progetto quanto mai puntuale nel suo tentativo di documentare l’evoluzione di questa rappresentazione.
